Social Networking and 10-Minute Success May 13, 2008

Today I discovered ning.com. I actually found it through Jay Cross’ blog and I have spent half the day looking, responding and playing around. Here are the two “Ning Sites” that I have joined:

http://internettime.ning.com/ (sponsored by Jay Cross)

http://www.learningtown.com (sponsored by Elliot Masie)

On the Ning.com site, there is a link for “Ning for Business”, which I haven’t perused, but it made me think that this might be a good “Web 2.0″ tool to add to your learning environment (or as Jay Cross put it, “ecosystem”).

On the Learning Town site (it’s somewhat overwhelming, I must admit), I found a post from Lisa Neal on Ten Things You Can Do In 10 Minutes To Be A More Successful e-Learning Professional. This is a great post that I wanted to share. Are you not an eLearning Professional? Then spend 10 minutes thinking of 10 things you could do for your own area of expertise!

And back to Ning.com… This would be a great tool to use with/attach to a class (or online learning session) to allow the learners to interact and ask questions of each other. One could even use this for a learning group. Another possibility for this tool is as a community of practice or just common interest. I know of several blogs that always incorporate an Open Comments thread. Ning might be a better tool for that.

UPDATE:

I mentioned ning.com to a friend who is very involved with Social Networking (among other things) in his job.  He gave me a link for “White Label Social Networking Software” — a whole list of software that can be repackaged for use inside an organization.

Thanks for the kind words!

I also like ning and have found it very easy to use and versatile. I haven’t used it for an online course yet but would be interested to hear about your experiences if you do.

cheers, Ensnarement.

Hi Ensnarement,

OK, this is probably not one of my most concise posts. ;-)

The point is that ning.com’s tool might work well as part of a blended learning environment. The comment about 10-minute Success was a sidetrack that I found interesting.

My mind is not “wired” to go straight from point A to point B — I usually end up visiting D, Q, C and Z along the way. I try really hard to edit that out of my posts — sometimes I do better than others.

Glad you enjoyed the blog.
